JJA Online Workshop
Reality-Based Facebook
(Please note: This workshop was conducted in Jan, 2013 and Facebook has changed some functionality and its algorithm since then. However, we think you will find much of the basic information still valuable, especially if you are a FB beginner.)

Having a Facebook page is now practically a necessity for professional media-makers, authors, musicians and artists of all kinds as well as for arts groups and other kinds of non-profit organizations. But being on Facebook is no p.r. panacea, and FB has made recent changes that have greatly reduced the number of people who see page posts. In this workshop, we'll cut through the hype that sometimes surrounds talk about using Facebook for publicity and give some "Reality-based" suggestions.

Many Facebook page owners find that using pages to publicize their work and their events is more complicated than they expected:  It's tough to collect page "fans, to get fans to "engage" by commenting or reposting and --this comes as a surprise to many owners-- Facebook doesn't even show all of your page posts to all of your fans. In fact, the number of fans who are shown posts has demonstrably dropped lately and many owners are wondering whether FB made changes to force owners to pay for FB ads or "promoted posts."

In this workshop we'll start with a brief discussion of how to easily set up a professional Facebook page, then explore what the recent changes mean for page owners and how (or whether) they can continue to use Facebook effectively despite the changes.

Workshop Topics
  • Mistakes to avoid in creating a Facebook page
  • Attracting page "fans"
  • Should you use FB "events" to publicize your events?
  • What is the FB "algorithm"?
  • Can you increase your page views?
  • When and why should you pay for ads or posts?
This workshop will provide information of use to anyone with a Facebook page, though it is oriented toward individuals, especially arts journalists , who use Facebook for professional purposes and arts organizations that want to use Facebook for promotion or education.
