The unique subculture of Japanese jazz cafés is the pictorial subject off photographer Philip Arneill's keen eye, as depicted in Tokyo Jazz Joints, a nominee for the JJA's 2024 Jazz Book of the Year Award. Interviewed on the JJA's podcast The Buzz. Photojournalist Arneill, Belfast-born and -based again after a Japanese sojourn, has insights into a society he found to be complex, on the margins, and likely to vanish. A rare glimpse into an unusual topic. Hrayr Attarian, a Chicago street-photographer, is an apt host.

Previous "Seeing Jazz" sessions with Adriana Mateo, Luciano Rossetti, Lauren Deutsch, Marc PoKempner, Nedici “Gagy” Dragoslav, Ken Franckling, Lou Jones, Stuart Brinin, Enid Farber, Harvey Tillis, Robert Birnbach, Bill King, Mark Sheldon, John Abbott, Tatiana Gorilovsky and Lisa Hagen Glynn are on view in archival form at the JJA's YouTube channel.
